My diagnosis was not a surprise. My dog told me I was sick. So the information was more of a confirmation.

I made the informed decision to not seek treatment. To forego immunotherapy. Everyone one this site talks to me like choosing me to live my joy as best I can until I die was the wrong decision and I am a coward.

What would have been helpful to know on day one of your melanoma diagnosis?

Understanding your cancer stage early on is crucial. Melanoma is rated on a staging system from 0 to 4, with higher stages indicating larger, deeper, or spread tumors. Your doctor will use physical exams, blood work, imaging tests, and possibly a biopsy to determine your stage.

Knowing your stage helps you understand your outlook and treatment options. It's about finding a balance between being informed and not becoming overwhelmed.

Many people wish they'd known how important it is to pay attention to skin changes, no matter how small. Changes in color, size, asymmetrical shapes, or unusual borders in moles are reasons to see a dermatologist right away. Regular skin cancer checks are key to catching tumors early.

The healing process can take time. Some people need to wear bandages for months and may undergo treatments like laser therapy to help scars heal properly.

It's also normal to experience emotional and financial impacts alongside the physical aspects of melanoma. Finding support and asking questions helps navigate this journey.
